POSTCARD WORKSHOP: IN RAINBOW WORLD
By Rupert Loydell
Introduction
This workshop focuses attention on the process of shaping and editing a poem. Like many of the workshops I use it initially takes the form of a word game. The workshop needs two sessions for this workshop – either before & after lunch, or on two consecutive days. The first session takes about 15 minutes, the second as long as you like!
You will need to gather together a set of postcards showing images of bright, colourful characters, places, ‘things’. Taschen’s Marc Chagall postcard book is good, as are the surrealists generally. Get in the habit of picking up and keeping free postcards, comb the racks whenever you visit arts centres and museums. You should have about ten more postcards than the size of the class you are teaching.

Rupert has run this in my school a few times over the years and it is most successful in producing, firstly, many ideas for writing, and then shaping these into poems – he does possess some extremely weird postcards though from probably his weirder poet friends…..
