Judith Heneghan launches her debut adult novel, Snegurochka
In April, Judith Heneghan held two launch events to celebrate the publication of her debut adult fiction novel, Snegurochka, one kindly hosted by the P.G. Wells bookshop in Winchester and one at Burley Fisher in London. Both events attracted large audiences, who were delighted by Judith's readings and her account of how she came to write the book. P.G. Wells actually sold out of copies on the night!
Snegurochka is an atmospheric, beautifully written novel about a young wife and mother who follows her husband, a journalist, to Kiev during a bitter winter shortly after the 'emancipation' of Ukraine. Rachel, the heroine, has to learn how to find the courage to carve out her new identity as a mother following the birth of her son and finds help in unexpected quarters. Sub-plots giving just enough detail about the criminal underworld and the sometimes murky exploits of the media add texture and several layers of meaning. There is also an undertow of magic, which relieves the austerity of Rachel's existence as she re-lives a modern version of the fairy tale about Snegurochka, the snow maiden.
Salt would like to offer Judith many congratulations. We are certain this Snegurochka will be the first of many distinguished novels to come from her.
